Hornsey Carpet Cleaners Health and Safety Policy

Hornsey Carpet Cleaners is committed to providing professional carpet, upholstery and floor cleaning services while protecting the health, safety and welfare of our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public. We recognise that effective health and safety management is an integral part of delivering reliable cleaning services in homes, offices and commercial premises.

Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm arising from our work activities. We aim to continually improve our health and safety performance through planning, training, supervision and regular review of our procedures.

Responsibilities and Management

Overall responsibility for health and safety within Hornsey Carpet Cleaners rests with the company management, who ensure that appropriate resources, information and training are provided. Managers are responsible for implementing this policy, monitoring compliance and promoting a positive health and safety culture throughout the business.

All employees, whether full-time, part-time or temporary, have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Staff must follow all safety procedures, cooperate with instructions, and report hazards, incidents and near misses to their supervisor without delay.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

We conduct risk assessments for our carpet, upholstery and hard floor cleaning activities in domestic and commercial environments. These assessments identify potential hazards, evaluate the level of risk and determine appropriate control measures. Risk assessments are reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in work practices, equipment, cleaning products or premises.

Safe systems of work are developed from these assessments and communicated to staff. These include procedures for the safe use of machinery, vehicles, water extraction equipment, portable electrical tools and chemical products. Employees must follow these safe systems at all times and must not undertake tasks for which they have not been trained or authorised.

Chemical Safety and COSHH

Cleaning chemicals used by Hornsey Carpet Cleaners are managed in line with recognised control of substances hazardous to health principles. We obtain and keep safety data sheets for all products, and we assess the risks from their use, storage and disposal.

Staff receive training on the correct dilution, application, storage and disposal of cleaning agents and stain treatments. Chemicals are transported in clearly labelled containers, kept secure in vehicles, and never left unattended where children, pets or members of the public could gain access. Personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection and masks is provided where required and must be worn as instructed.

Use of Equipment and Electrical Safety

All cleaning machinery, including carpet extraction machines, vacuums and rotary equipment, is selected, maintained and used with safety as a priority. Equipment is inspected regularly and removed from service if any defects are identified.

Electrical safety is critical when operating powered cleaning equipment in customers premises. Staff are trained to check cables, plugs and sockets before use, avoid overloading circuits, keep electrical equipment away from water, and route cables to minimise tripping hazards. Any sign of damage or malfunction must be reported immediately and the equipment taken out of use until repaired by a competent person.

Manual Handling and Ergonomics

Our work often involves lifting, carrying and moving machinery, hoses and containers. To reduce the risk of injury, manual handling assessments are carried out and safe lifting techniques are taught. Employees are instructed to use handling aids where available, share loads where practical, and avoid lifting items that are too heavy or awkward for them.

When cleaning carpets, upholstery and hard floors, staff are expected to work in a way that reduces strain, using appropriate tools and adjusting their posture to avoid repetitive movements that could cause long-term injury.

Working in Client Premises

We recognise our responsibility to ensure that our operations do not put customers, their families, visitors or staff at risk. Before starting work, our cleaning team will assess the immediate environment and identify potential hazards such as trailing cables, slippery floors, restricted access or vulnerable occupants.

Warning signs are used where appropriate, and work areas are organised to minimise disruption. We take particular care in homes with children, elderly people, pets or those with limited mobility, and we will adapt our methods where necessary to keep everyone safe.

Slips, Trips and Falls

Wet floors, hoses and equipment can create slip and trip hazards during cleaning work. We mitigate these risks by managing cables carefully, using warning signs, controlling access to areas being cleaned and ensuring floors are left as dry as reasonably practicable before we leave the premises.

Any spillages or leaks from equipment are cleaned up immediately, and staff are instructed to maintain good housekeeping standards at all times.

Personal Protective Equipment

Hornsey Carpet Cleaners provides suitable personal protective equipment where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. This may include gloves, masks, eye protection, knee pads and protective footwear, depending on the task.

Employees are responsible for using PPE correctly, looking after it and reporting any loss or damage. Replacement PPE is provided as necessary, and staff will not be asked to work without appropriate protective equipment.

Health, Welfare and Training

We are committed to maintaining the physical and mental wellbeing of our workforce. Staff are encouraged to raise any health concerns that may affect their ability to work safely, and we will consider reasonable adjustments where appropriate.

All employees receive induction training that covers this health and safety policy, emergency procedures, incident reporting and safe use of equipment and chemicals. Ongoing training and refresher sessions are provided to ensure that skills and knowledge are kept up to date as our services and methods develop.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported and recorded so that they can be investigated and, where possible, prevented from happening again. We review accident records to identify patterns and opportunities for improvement.

Staff are trained in basic emergency procedures, including what to do in the event of fire, electrical shock, chemical exposure or injury while working at a client site. First aid supplies are kept in company vehicles, and medical attention is sought promptly whenever required.

Review and Continuous Improvement

This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure that it remains relevant, effective and in line with current best practice for cleaning operations. We welcome feedback from employees and customers to help us improve our standards and maintain a safe, professional service.

By working together, following procedures and taking responsibility for safety, Hornsey Carpet Cleaners aims to deliver high-quality cleaning services while protecting everyone involved in or affected by our work.
